Land Pollution is one of the many issues we would wish to create awareness in people
Causes of Land Pollution :
- Increase of urbanization would cause the increase of constructions, in turn lead to the increase in demand for raw materials. Raw materials such as timber, would lead to the destruction of forests.
- More land is needed for agriculture due to the greater demand for food among the human population. The need for land would usually result in deforestation for land.
- The human population create millions of tons of domestic waste everyday. Waste collected from homes, offices and industries can be recycled or incinerated. Large amounts of waste cannot be recycled or burnt, this results in the need for land to be dumping grounds for this waste.
- Agricultural activities like spraying pesticides on crops causes land pollution when the pesticides are washed into the ground.
- Industrial activities also contribute to land pollution. Activities like coal mining causes mining waste while mining for coal. These wastes often contain poisonous substances that contaminate the ground.
Effects of Land Pollution :
- Exterminates wild life, which sometimes leads to many species going extinct.
- Acid rain cause by land pollution, kills many different plant or animal species due to its acidic properties.
- Forest vegetation that provides food or shelter to many different kinds of species are destroyed due to the pollution.
- Land pollution seriously disrupts the balance of nature, and, in extreme cases, can cause human fatalities too.
- Pesticides from agricultural activities causes damage crops, kill fores vegetation, and could also poison birds, animals, and fish. Most pesticides kill or damage life forms other than those for its intended use.
- Skin problems are often a result of land pollution. The improper disposal of household wastes may lead to allergic reactions on the skin.
